The Protection (Pokrov) of the Mother of God
October 1/14

Our Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary appeared to the faithful Orthodox in the year 911 in Blacharnae, Constantinople during an All-Night Vigil. Fearing for their lives, the faithful gathered in prayer for protection from an impending attack. Among those present were St. Andrew, the Fool-For-Christ, and his disciple, St. Epiphanius.
The Mother of our God, along with St. John the Baptist, angels, martyrs, and saints, approached the center of the church, knelt down, and remained in prayer for a long time, her face drowned in tears. Then she took off her veil (omophorion) and spread it over the faithful as a sign of protection. The people were saved from the enemies that day because of her protection.
Troparion
Today we Orthodox people joyfully celebrate thy glorious coming
among us, O Mother of God,
and gazing upon thy most pure image,
we say with compunction:
Shelter us with thy most precious protection,
and deliver us from all evil,
and pray to thy Son, Christ our God,
that He save our souls.
